Hugh Chapman

Hugh Chapman, is an emerging English sculptor who is now gaining recognition in the UK. Chapman turned to art as a career after sustaining a traumatic head injury and meningitis as a teenager. Initially he concentrated on photography in which he learned the significance of light, contrast and reflection. He then progressed to three-dimensional work in ceramics, which he had studied at school. This led to sculptural forms in other media and then larger, bolder works in bronze. The rhythmical interplay of finely sculpted edges and surfaces in Chapman's work has a unique beauty which is at odds with much of contemporary art. His work is inspired by an appreciation of the natural world in which he found solace when he was coming to terms with his head injury. "Through the pursuit of beauty we shape the world as a home and, in doing so, we both amplify our joys and find consolation for our sorrows" Roger Scruton
