It was a day that will go down in Wigan Athletic history as the Dave Whelan statue at the DW Stadium was unveiled on Thursday afternoon.
After months of anticipation, hundreds of supporters and many special guests gathered at the DW to witness the unveiling as the man himself pulled the cord to reveal the sublime sculptor, produced by the highly-acclaimed Sean Hedges-Quinn.
Chairman David Sharpe said to host Peter Stevenson just before the unveiling:
“It’s a very proud moment for my Granddad, for our whole family and for everyone associated with Wigan Athletic Football Club.
“After lifting the FA Cup at Wembley, this is the proudest day of his life and it is a moment I and my family will never forget.”
After Pemberton Old Wigan DW Band, along with the choir from Westfield Community Primary School, played a number of Mr. Whelan’s favourite songs, the club’s owner took to the stage to finally reveal the statue.
A visibly proud and emotional Mr. Whelan took a moment before saying:
“It makes me look younger!
“I am so, so proud today and thank you to my family and the football club for this magnificent gesture.
“The statue itself is wonderful and Sean has done a brilliant job; the likeness surprised me so much and it perfectly captures my favourite memory with the football club when we won the FA Cup at Wembley, after the FA had given me permission to lead the team out.”
