These two relief-panels (by Michael Sandle) entitled ‘Night’ and ‘Day’ were designed for a new building in St Helier, Jersey that is ‘Art-Deco’ in feel. They are intended to reflect this style, without being slavishly ‘retro’ or merely ornamental. They are strongly modelled in order to be read at a distance as they are sited high up on the exterior of the building.
‘Night’ and ‘Day’ was chosen as a theme to compliment the universal style of the building and Aluminium Bronze was chosen for the casting because of its resistance to sea-air and its ‘Byzantine’ golden colour, which relates well to the specific design of the relieves and to the character of the building as a whole.
